The Art Institute of Chicago has thousands of works of art on view—each with their own stories to tell. The AIC hired the IMA Lab to develop an iOS mobile application, Closer, to help bring these stories to life. The app’s design, software development, systems integration, and deployment were all executed by the IMA Lab. The initial result is an elegant interface highlighting ten artworks in the museum's renowned collection of modern art and eventually encompassing other collections. Each artwork includes a range of multimedia materials including zoomable imagery, object information, multi-page stories, and share features. Closer provides an informative and engaging experience for visitors while offering a flexible design for expanding content.
The IMA Lab designed a custom interface to align with the Art Institute of Chicago's brand while keeping in mind that the interface will grow and evolve over time, both with additional content and vast array of objects. The app is object-centric and broken down into three main sections: about, tours, and a floor plan to help visitors find each of the featured artworks and navigate the galleries. The end result is a beautifully crafted interactive experience that gives visitors behind-the-scenes glimpses into context and conditions of art on a custom platform rooted in improving the gallery experience.
In addition to the mobile app, the IMA Lab developed a content authoring system to take advantage of existing authoring tools and content structures that were already implemented for the LaunchPad iPad app.Download App
